Tarja or no Tarja, Nightwish is still my favorite symphonic power metal band. It’s Nightwish, plain and simple. The album flows beautifully and the musicianship is amazing.

Dose of Reality Please
by BigToe - 24/11/2016

Nightwish has been my favorite band since they released Once. I waited with great anticipation for this album. People are quick to tag it with 5 stars, but if Once and Dark Passion Play were 5-star albums, then Imaginaerum has to be a 3.

The best songs on the album aren’t nearly as good as their older offerings, and there are far too many throw-away songs.

Storytime, Ghost River and Last Ride of the Day are solid tracks that would be middling on any of their albums since Century Child. All the other songs are dragged down by one flaw or another, be it trite lyrics, repetitive (or worse derative) melodies, and in some cases the just plain bizarre. They simply aren’t up the usually high standards indicative of Nightwish.

It’s still a Nightwish album, and Imaginaerum is still better than most of the albums offered by other symphonic metal outfits, but this is a slight step back for an incredible band.

Absolutely Perfect
by Rhturn - 24/11/2016

I have been a Nightwish fan since I first heard "Once" back in high school. I was a music major, pursuing a degree in jazz performance on the trumpet. Their music appealed to me in so many ways I never thought possible, and it still does... when I heard Tarja had left I was quite upset. In the long run though it was for the better. If she hadn’t left, Anette never would have come into the band. This album would have never been released. This album is absolutely stunning, perfect, and has some of the most insane musicianship I have EVER heard in my life. Definitely their best outing...

But be wary, there is much experimentation in this album. Older fans may not appreciate it if they go in with their minds closed. Give it a chance though, it’s worth it.
