Song lyrics

[Verse 1]
Bought this sweater for a dollar
Feeling lucky in LA
Run around the town for hours
Past the edge of the day
Took the back way up the hillside...

Canterbury Girls

Lily & Madeleine

[Verse 1]
Bought this sweater for a dollar
Feeling lucky in LA
Run around the town for hours
Past the edge of the day
Took the back way up the hillside
Ignored the signs that said, "Keep out"
If we're caught there's no way to hide
Will they see our glowing mouths?

[Chorus]
Dancing moonlight muses all this time
I know there's a limit but I don't feel it, not tonight
Soaked in sunshine, don't know where to be
But if you're doin' what I'm doin', then we're free

[Verse 2]
You've been telling me for months now
Not to throw it all away
Canterbury girls are heartless
But Tijuana boys just play

[Chorus]
Dancing moonlight muses all this time
I know there's a limit but I don't feel it, not tonight
Soaked in sunshine, don't know where to be
But if you're doin' what I'm doin', then we're free

[Outro]
And I don't know where to go
Maybe I should pack my things and leave
Move to somewhere warmer
Where the sun is always shining over me

  • What have the artists said about the song?

Lily and I were in LA for a couple days a few summers ago while on tour with another artist. We were playing the Greek Theater that night and were inspired by the Muses, this idea of an otherworldly power guiding the artists who played there. Earlier that day I had bought a cardigan from a thrift store for $1 and was feeling pretty damn lucky to be in such a beautiful city. Two of my girl friends happened to be in town so we climbed up the Hollywood hills and viewed the whole city from above. I felt powerful, energetic, feminine, and on top of the world. This society we've created often doesn't allow women to have power over themselves and their domains. In that moment I felt like one of the Muses.— Madeleine on an Instagram post

    Lily also says:

We decided to name the record Canterbury Girls because of a line I stuck in my verse of this song. We lived briefly in Forest Hills near Canterbury Park in Indianapolis, and my friends and I would ride our bikes around there or go on long walks and talk about what kind of women we wanted to become once we were out of middle school. We were so dorky! But it's special to think about that time now because we were pretty unaware of the limitations we were facing. To me, this album is about embracing that spirit of innocence and ambition despite your setbacks and limitations, and when I listen to it I feel like I did well by those middle school girls.
