Song lyrics

[Verse 1]
No revolution, the dead on the street
More dead than alive
War in the east and your office suite
Spectacle spirals, twist and unwind
Tigers of wrath, dark energy...

Dark Energy

The Cult

[Verse 1]
No revolution, the dead on the street
More dead than alive
War in the east and your office suite
Spectacle spirals, twist and unwind
Tigers of wrath, dark energy
The horse of instruction, a mystery to me

[Chorus]
Every soul alive burns bright in this life
(Baby) Make them crawl to you, make them beg for you
It'll come to life, let it come to life

Hey

[Verse 2]
Skull full of roses, breath of life
Steal the breath of life
Heart is a mountain, a movement of ghosts
Tribes are all dancing, tribes are all dancing
Tigers of wrath, dark energy
Horse of instruction, a mystery to me

[Pre-Chorus]
Every soul alive burns bright in this life
Baby make them crawl to you, make them beg for you
Baby baby let it come to life, baby come to life

[Chorus]
Every soul alive burns bright in this life
Baby make them crawl to you, make them beg for you
It'll come to life, let it come to life

[Verse 3]
Crawl out of caves, monuments to the sun
The stars own our names
Constellations all gone
Defend the magic
Defend the beauty
The death of the species
Crush black tears

[Bridge]
Every
(You admire yourself)
Soul alive
(You worship nothing)
Burns bright
(Everything empty)
In this life
(Chewing on dirt)

[Outro]
Baby make them crawl to you, make them beg for you
Baby make it come to life, baby come to life
Every soul alive yea burns bright in this life
Baby make them crawl to you, make them beg for you
It'll come to life, let it come to life

"Dark Energy" Track Info

‘Dark Energy' (taking the title itself into account) is the lead single for The Cult's pending album ‘Hidden City', deliberately titled after the Spanish phrase “La Ciudad Oculta”, referencing a slum outside Beunos Aires that was walled off (hence its name) by the then military dictatorship in 1978 so world press would not bear witness to the squalor of approximately 20,000 living without basic services who worked primarily in the meat processing plants, but also for the railways. Given the video's content this reference doesn't seem unintentional. The walls conferred its name and exacerbated the already deplorable conditions; police and firefighters refused to enter and La Cuidad Oculta was controlled by criminal gangs as a consequence. Rape is so prevalent pre-teens deliberately get pregnant in order make themselves undesirable. Incidentally the largest PR firm in the world, Burson-Marstellar (out of New York) worked to whitewash this military junta's image which (source depending) ‘disappeared' and murdered between 10 000 and 30 000 people (even 50 000 gets bandied about), mainly targeting intellectual thought and what it identified as subversion in killing students. The Argentine president of the period, Jorge Rafael Videla, was arrested for the grotesquery of ‘baby-harvesting' pregnant women disappeared to his military prisons before they were murdered and circumspectly providing some of the offspring to military households, children raised in the hands of their mothers' murderers. A veiled double Argentinian reference occurs in the song, interpolated with Ian Astbury's solo album Spirit/Light/Speed (see annotations). It is the country of origin of Pope Francis. Politically Argentina is very much a present concern.

In terms of the spiritual, it is also a term for the hidden city of Petra, Jordan.

It is perhaps not ironic (given the brief lyrical allusion to the hijack of Arab Spring and the subsequent decimation of Libya and Syria) that the archeologist of Petra's ‘discovery' (the Bedouins were mum, no f***ing wonder) worked out of Aleppo, gaining access by passing himself off as Bedouin.
