Song lyrics

[Intro: Interpolates 'Why' and 'Pioneer']
La di da di da
La di da di da
La di da di da, la la
La di da di da
(I wanna go deeper than they did before)...

New Moon

Tom Aspaul

[Intro: Interpolates 'Why' and 'Pioneer']
La di da di da
La di da di da
La di da di da, la la
La di da di da
(I wanna go deeper than they did before)

[Verse 1: Interpolates 'Full Moon']
Boy, I saw you soon as you came bouncin' through the door
You and your mans and them just took over the floor
Started doing your thang
And it made me notice you even more
The way you turned around and looked at me it seemed as though
You must've somehow felt me staring on the low
Something tells me you're the kind of guy I'd like to get to know

[Chorus: Interpolates 'Full Moon']
I ain't even gonna front
I ain't even gonna lie
Since you walked up in the club
I've been giving you the eye
We can dance if you want
Get it crackin' if you like
Must be a full moon
Feel like one of those nights

[Post-Chorus: Interpolates 'Why']
La di da di da
La di da di da
La di da di da, la la
La di da di da

[Verse 2: Interpolates 'Full Moon' and 'Why']
Why (don't know why)
Is this the first time that I'm seeing you around?
Could you be visiting or are you new in town
Yeah, whatever the case, I'm feeling you right here and right now
Your smile and all the love you showing lets me know that you
Like what you see and wanna get to know me too
This could very well be the start of something special
Happy that I met you

[Chorus: Interpolates 'Full Moon']
I ain't even gonna front
I ain't even gonna lie
Since you walked up in the club
I've been giving you the eye
We can dance if you want
Get it crackin' if you like
Must be a full moon
Feel like one of those nights

[Bridge: Interpolates 'Pioneer']
You're an island nobody found
And I'm the beaches that wrap around
It's all a mystery and it's all a game
I wanna stakeout and make my claim
So let go me go wonderin'
So let me explore
I wanna go deeper
Than ever before

"New Moon" Track Info

It was January 2015 and I wanted to do a few cover versions for my mixtape.

I got into the studio with Starsmith, whom I massively respected and mentioned doing something like a cover of ‘Full Moon' by Brandy.

I'm pretty sure we were supposed to be working on something new, but after messing around with the chords, we realised that it would be cool to interpolate elements of Carly Simon, ‘Why' into the song.

‘Why' is probably one of my Top 5 songs of all time, at this point, ‘New Moon' took on a whole life of it's own. There were so many cool little crossovers and interplaying lines from each tune, it was incredibly exciting to create. Eventually elements of ‘Pioneer' were added and it became a strange blend of three songs, which ultimately felt like we were creating something new after all.

Even though I was singing a female artist's song, there was no question whether I should change the pronouns or not. I particularly enjoyed singing using the male pronouns, and in fact, it's something I have set out to do more often in my own work.
